Safety-led research

Accessible alarm communication

Exploring how verified messages from certified alarms could eventually reach people through supplemental tactile and multimodal outputs.

← Sensory Awareness overview
Important safety boundary: Sensivo does not detect smoke, fire or carbon monoxide and must not replace certified alarms or required notification appliances. This page describes a potential supplemental communication layer and a simulation-stage research plan.

The alarm detects. Sensivo communicates.

1

Certified alarm

Approved equipment detects a hazard and performs its existing notification functions.

2

Approved status interface

A compatible, manufacturer-supported method could pass a verified event signal.

3

Accessibility translation

Proposed software identifies event type, location and user-selected outputs.

4

Supplemental notification

Haptics, Braille, text or other independent accessible receiving devices.

Safe first research demonstration

The concept guide recommends a simulation using fictitious alarm events, without connecting to or modifying real alarm equipment. Participants could compare tactile patterns and verify whether simulated messages appear on different outputs.

No real-world use should be encouraged without qualified life-safety engineering, standards and legal review.

Validation questions

  • Can users distinguish simulated fire and carbon monoxide alerts?
  • Do disconnected devices generate clear failure notices?
  • Will the prototype work without internet access?
  • Can the entire simulated input-to-output chain be tested?
